Sometimes it can be hard to know if you need a thorough carpet cleaning or if a simple vacuuming will do the trick.
1. Move some long-standing furniture (like a couch) out of the way. Compare the carpet under the couch to the carpet that’s accessible on a day-to-day basis. The carpet under the couch (or at least under the couch legs) usually looks cleaner than the rest of the carpet, so if your regular carpet looks like a different color than the ‘cleaner’ carpet, it might be time to bring in the pros!
2. Scent test! It’s not always pleasant but it is effective. Don’t just stand in the room and sniff—anyone who lives in your home is probably too used to any smells to notice –get your nose down to the floor and take a whiff. If you smell anything other than carpet (soda, animals, etc), it’s time for a cleaning. Bonus points if you ask a good friend who doesn’t live with you if they notice anything when they come into your house. It’s amazing what the people who live in a home won’t notice, but any guests you have over will! This is especially important for pet owners!
3. How long has it been since your last carpet cleaning? How often you should get your carpet cleaned will vary; if you’re a pretty tidy single person, you’ll need it less often than a household with two kids, a dog, and a cat! On average, a carpet cleaning is a good choice once a year, but factor in your usage of the carpet (and by how many people and animals) and work out what’s right for you.
